Is it me, or are the seventies movies much more "substantial" than the eighties ones? I don't mean better; there are excellent ones on the eighties list. But the heart of the films - the seventies ones seem to carry more weight. No?

There is something to that. I think it just shows how much the industry changed in that 10 year span. In the 70's the directors had all the control, so you get more intimate, character driven small films like Taxi Driver or Badlands. The 80's was the decade of the blockbuster where the studio regained control. Thus movies like Aliens or ET are more the flavor of the decade. Really it is progbably the same with every decade, but this is the most glaring example. Do The Right Thing is really a throwback to the 70's in the kind of story it tells. I'm a big 70's movie fan, by far the best decade for films.
